What's a bunion?
A bunion (also known as hallux valgus), is a bony bump at the base of the big toe joint, on the inside of the foot. A bunion develops slowly, when pressure on the joint makes the big toe lean to the second toe, eventually causing the bone's structure to change.
As this deformity increases, wearing shoes or even just walking becomes more painful. Bunions are often a hereditary disorder, but can also occur due to activities, inherent foot structure, or shoe choices. Even children can get bunions.
It's also possible to get a "bunionette", which occurs near the base of the little toe on the outside of the foot.
Bunion Treatment
Bunion pain can usually be solved by wearing wider shoes that have more room in the toe box. There are other ways to treat them as well. Here's a list of treatment options:
Wear wider shoes.
Pads.
Anti-inflammatory medications for pain and to reduce swelling.
Surgery.
